MAYORAL CANDIDATE
GLORIA BROMWELL - TINUBU, Ph.D.

Dr. Gloria Bromwell-Tinubu was the guest speaker at the Midtown Neighbors' Association's (MNA) meeting held at the Mary Mac's Tea Room this past Tuesday evening. She was introduced by MNA Vice President Jannie Gerds who is also running for the City Council seat representing District 6.

Gloria is an associate professor of economics with tenure, and former chairperson of the Department of Economics at Spellman College since 1986. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Economics in 1986 and Master's in Agricultural Economics from Clemson University in 1977. In May 1999 Governor Roy Barnes appointed
her to the State Board of Education. As a former City Councilmember representing District 12, Gloria has mastered extensive community development experience. She authored legislation creating the City's Neighborhood Deputies Program and Atlanta Cooperative Development Corporation. She spearheaded redevelopment plans for Metropolitan Parkway and Jonesboro Road. She also chaired the Council's Community Development/Human Resources Committee.

During her presentation one virtue that came across crystal clear was her honesty as well as her commitment to service. She repeatedly mentioned that putting service above self-interest was one of her primary goals. During a lively questions-and-answers session, she was not reluctant to say "I don't know" or "I don't have the answer yet." Especially when the issue of homeless was raised by Ms. Noraye Hinds, she did not hesitate to say "I don't know" and she invited citizen participation and ideas so that she can formulate the right plan to address this issue effectively. She spoke of cost-effective government and reducing waste, improving service delivery and encouraging greater citizen participation in city government. One could not help but notice her genuine commitment to community service. No wonder, Gloria has received numerous honors and awards. Among them, in January 2000, Spellman College honored her with an award for "Community and Public Policy", and in May 2000 she was honored by the Atlanta Business Women Association-Peach Chapter as Business Associate.

Gloria has been married since 1976 to Nigerian-born Soji Tinubu, a Clemson graduate in civil engineering. They are the proud parents of four children, one daughter Titilayo, age 19 and three sons Ayo, Femi and Tayo, ages 21, 17 and 15 respectively. We wish Gloria and her family the very best during her campaign in the months ahead.
