A NOTE OF THANKS

We owe a heartfelt "thank you" to Owen Omundsen who volunteered to write an editorial last week on Commissioner Boxill's Tax Meeting.

The article was factual and informative. We have received a couple of calls from our readers who commented on the fine writing.

We invite Mr. Omundsen to become a Guest Editor again on any issue of his choice.

Editor's Corner
2001 GAY PRIDE PARADE

More than quarter of a million people participated in the three-day ceremonies of Atlanta's 2001 Gay Pride festivities. Pride of Atlanta is celebrated annually the last full weekend of June in rememberance of the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. At least a dozen of declared candidates showed their support by joining in the parade.

From all measurements, the three-day affair was a smashing success. There were over 250 vendor booths in the PRIDE Market Place and more than 200 groups, floats and cars participated in the parade. In addition, there was a great number of couples who had registered for the Commitment. Although it is not legally recognized as a marriage, nevertheless, it does bond two people who commit themselves to share their lives together.

Among the several speeches, the predominant subject was AIDS, the prevention and reduction of the virus. There are about thirty million people around the world, inflicted with the virus. A very positive move took place this week at the United Nations where a global accord was reached on AIDS, committing nations to reduce infection rates by 25% by the year 2005, in the hardest hit countries, and globally by the year 2010. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is trying to set up a Global AIDS Fund, to become operational by the end of the year, with an ultimate funding goal of ten billion dollars.

All in all, 2001 Gay Pride was a success. Please mark your calendars for 2002 Gay Pride which will take place on June 28, 29 and 30 at Piedmont Park.
