He is a Certified Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church and a member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church where he serves on the Restoration Finance Committee.

Needless to mention that we have a candidate here with an extensive record of service and community involvement. The State Representative's post fits him like a glove. We wish Bob the best of luck in his campaign during the months ahead.

PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

As our tour arrived in the city of Xi'an, the first and foremost of the six ancient capitals of China, we found ourselves embrassed with the rich history and great culture of this city. It is here that the Lantian Man, a trace of the ape man, left his foot-prints more than million years ago. It is here that ruins of villages inhabited by the earliest residents of the earth were discovered. It is here that Buddhist relics from the Famen Temple were found. And it is here that more recently the Terra-cotta Army, pottery warriors and horses dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 B.C.), were uncovered. Xi'an is an unparalleled museum with its colorful and unique characteristics.

It was in the early spring of 1974 when three farmers were digging for a well at the foot of Mt. Lishan, about 20 miles out of Xi'an when they accidentally discovered pieces of broken pottery warriors. Little did they know that this was the beginning of one of the greatest discoveries of the century.

6,000 life-size pottery warriors, chariots and horses arranged in battle formation as the main force, uncovered in what is now known as pit #1 (14,200 square meters) east of the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Pit #2 is located 20 meters north of Pit #1. It covers an area of approximately 6,000 square meters. It contains 1,300 terra-cotta armored warriors and horses together with about 90 wooden chariots in a battle formation of a mixed army of infantry, cavalry and chariots. Pit #3 is located 120 meters east of pit #2. It covers an area of about 500 square meters. Out of this pit was unearthed one wooden chariot, four terra-cotta horses and 68 terra-cotta armored warriors. The warriors are not in a battle formation. Instead, they stand opposite to each other in a pattern of the guard of honor. They hold bamboo weapons with pointed heads.

None of the terra-cotta warriors are the same. Each one has his own unique personality. Each warrior wears different facial expressions ranging from ponderation, dexterity, and simplicity to naivete, concentration, smiling and anxiety, without a pair in duplication. It is by no means an exaggeration to say that standing before the pits of the terra-cotta armored warriors and horses, one would feel as if he was reviewing the Qin army of over 2,000 years ago.

In 1987, the UNESCO placed the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum and the terra-cotta armored warriors and horses among the world's cultural legacies. This fully manifests that they are not only the cultural legacies of the Chinese nation, but also the rare treasures of mankind at large. They take up a splendid place in the history of human civilization.

Next week, we will cover another region and city of this vast land known as China.
